Seoul Metro Secrets: How to Master Tricky Branch Lines Like a Local!

Ever stepped onto a subway train and realized it was heading in a totally unexpected direction?

Following line colors works 90% of the time, but some trains split into different paths midway (Branch Lines) or run on one-way loops. Here is your quick survival guide to Seoul's 5 tricky fork routes!

1. ⚠️ Why Matching Line Colors Isn't Always Enough

  • Shared Tracks, Diverging Paths: Multiple train routes share the same track before splitting off at a junction.
  • The 3-Second Rule: Always check the digital LED screen on the front and side of the train for its final destination (Bound for / ~행) before stepping inside!

2. 🧭 5 Branch & Loop Routes You Must Know

  • Line 6 (Brown) — Eungam One-Way Loop:

The northwest section runs on a single track counter-clockwise loop. Stations like Bulgwang or Dokbawi have NO opposite platform—trains only move in one direction around the loop.

  • Gyeongui–Jungang Line (Teal) — Gajwa Split:

Splits at Gajwa Station. Most trains go toward Hongik Univ. / Yongsan, but infrequent branch trains head to Seoul Station (Ground). Check the destination screen if heading to Hongdae or Yongsan!

  • Line 1 (Dark Blue) — Major Fork Splits:

Splits at Guro Station into Incheon vs. Suwon/Cheonan. South of Suwon, it splits again toward Seodongtan vs. Cheonan/Sinchang.

  • Line 5 (Purple) — Gangdong Fork:

Splits at Gangdong Station into 'Hanam Geomdansan' vs. 'Macheon'. Heading to a K-pop concert at KSPO DOME (Olympic Park)? You MUST take the Macheon train.

  • Line 2 (Green) — Shuttle Branches:

While mostly a continuous loop, Seongsu Station and Sindorim Station have short shuttle branch lines (Seongsu & Sinjeong branches).
